Rachel De Bruin

Connecting Waters Charter School
Transition Coordinator
Rachel De Bruin, M.A., Transition Coordinator, Connecting Waters Charter Schools / Founder, Ability-Centered Educational Services
Rachel De Bruin has worked in special education (as a teacher and administrator) for over 15 years. From early in her career, Rachel often felt frustrated by a special education system that is very disability and deficit-centric – that is, students’ disabilities, inabilities, and weaknesses consumed most of the educational focus while their abilities and interests are generally ignored. Yet, in her experience and research, Rachel found that ability-centered and transition-focused education has the greatest potential to launch students into successful and meaningful post-secondary life outcomes. As a result, Rachel has devoted her career to building transition systems that are legally defensible and meaningful. Rachel currently works as the Transition Coordinator for Connecting Waters Charter Schools as well as Founder of the non-profit organization, Ability Centered Educational Services (ACES).
